In all Niantic games like Pikmin Bloom and Pokémon GO there are cheaters. In a recent podcast Dennis and I went into detail about this. And with cheating you should not only think of spoofing, but also scanners, the use of multiple accounts and giving other players your account information, for example, falls under cheating (there is much more by the way).
A large part of the ways of cheating can hardly be discovered or not at all. Having multiple accounts can be suspected, but Niantic can’t see it. Just like using scanners or exchanging data. The latter can be detected if the two players log in at the same time. However, Niantic announced last week that it would be tougher on cheaters. This will mainly mean that spoofers are tackled, because this is recognizable.
Over the past year, Niantic has used it to better recognize players who spoof. This is an important part of the process as players who didn’t cheat were also dealt with in the past. Niantic still uses the three-strike principle. The first time players get a warning and a small ban. The second time follows a warning and a bigger ban and the third time the account is deleted.
In the coming period, many spoofers (according to Niantic) will notice that the measures work better. And the first messages from players who have indeed been blocked are already appearing on the internet. We are curious whether Niantic will really push through. A spoofer known to us has been blocked about ten times, but has never completely lost his account. Although Niantic says it will. And although many spoofers also spend a lot of money, we hope that Niantic does not see this as a reason to pay less attention to this.
