NHL wants to move competition to summer if necessary NOW

The ice hockey players in the NHL may come into action in the summer. The North American league does not exclude that the current season can still be completed this year and even plans to continue playing until the end of August.

The current NHL season is currently suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak. The competition was interrupted on March 12, three weeks before the end of the regular season. The playoffs would normally end in early June.

“We have come to realize that we may have more time than we initially thought,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly on the competition’s website. “Depending on how the situation evolves, we would like to be able to play in the spring. And if we have to play in the summer, that shouldn’t be a problem.”

Postpone space Play

By postponing the Tokyo Olympics to 2021, space has now been made available to broadcast the matches on television. The NHL has asked all teams to make the stadiums available until the end of August.

“But it is clear that it is too early to predict what will really be possible,” Daly realizes. “At least we want to be ready to play as soon as that is possible again.”

The NHL has also been affected by the corona virus. Three players in the league have the virus among the members: two from the Ottawa Senators and one from the Colorado Avalanche.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
