NHK Announces New Program “Project X Challengers” with Sharp’s Camera-Equipped Mobile Phones – Coming April 13th!

On March 13th, NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) announced the broadcast date and time and broadcast lineup of the new program “New Project X Challengers” to be broadcast on NHK General Television from April. The theme of the second episode, which will be broadcast on April 13th, is “A team of weak and small groups changed the world – A rebellious reversal of camera-equipped mobile phones”, and Sharp’s camera-equipped mobile phones will be featured.

“Project X Challengers” is a popular documentary program on NHK. It was broadcast from 2000 to 2005, and is being revived for the first time in 18 years with this “new” version.

The new program will be broadcast every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The opening theme will be “New Earth Star” and the ending theme will be “Headlight/Taillight,” both of which will continue to be performed by Miyuki Nakajima.

The first broadcast will be on April 6th, and the theme is “Tokyo Sky Tree: Grand Construction in the Sky ~Taking on the World’s No.1 Radio Tower~”.

After the information about the program was released, Sharp’s official X (formerly Twitter) mentioned the program and revealed that Sharp’s camera-equipped mobile phones would be included in the broadcast content.

In November 2000, Sharp developed the world’s first practical mobile phone with a camera, the J-SH04, which was released by J-Phone (currently SoftBank Mobile). It was a forerunner of the camera functions that have become commonplace on today’s mobile phones and smartphones, such as the ability to send photos by email. In 2014, it was also registered as an Important History of Science and Technology Materials (Future Technology Heritage) by the National Museum of Nature and Science.
