  • sorae – Is the Earth surrounded by “hair” made of dark matter?

This was introduced by sorae in the article on January 22, 2021.An imaginary drawing of the Earth surrounded by dark matter “hairs” (filaments)“is.

The Earth may be surrounded by “hair” made of dark matter. This image was created based on a research paper published in 2015, and depicts streaks of dark matter spreading radially around the Earth.

According to research and simulations, dark matter orbiting around galaxies forms elongated streams. Researchers suggest that when this “flow” approaches a planet like Earth, the particles may form ultra-dense filaments that resemble hair.

The structure of this “hair” has a “root” part and a “tip” part. If the flow of dark matter passed through the Earth’s core, the dark matter could become concentrated in the “roots” of the hair.

The researchers say, “If we can identify the location of that root, we may be able to send a probe there and obtain important data about dark matter.”

As mentioned in the special feature “What is the mysterious hypothetical substance ‘dark matter’?”, dark matter is said to account for approximately 27% of all matter and energy in the universe. It is said that only about 5% of the ordinary substances that are around us are made up of substances, so over a quarter of that is a large proportion. However, although many experiments have been conducted to date to detect dark matter, it has never been directly detected.
