NHK Announces Changes to Satellite Broadcast System: What You Need to Know

NHK will change its three-wave satellite broadcast system from midnight on December 1st, shifting from the current “BS1,” “BS Premium,” and “BS4K” to a two-wave system of “NHK BS” and “NHK BS Premium 4K.” . Channel 103, which was used on BS Premium, will stop broadcasting regular programs at midnight on December 1st. The recording reservation registered with BS Premium needs to be changed from channel 103 to channel 101.

Due to the reorganization, the main programs of BS1 and BS Premium will be “condensed” to NHK BS and broadcast on channel 101. Although almost no regular programs will be discontinued, the channel and broadcast time of some programs will be changed.

Therefore, if you leave the recording reservation on BS Premium, the program recording will fail, so you will need to check the broadcast channel and broadcast time of the program you want to record and reset the recording reservation.

You can check the broadcast times of the programs you usually watch using “Program Search” on the NHK BS broadcasting portal site. Also, NHK BS’s program guide (EPG) is displayed one week before the start of broadcasting.

If the TV you are currently using does not support 4K broadcasting, NHK BS will be the only NHK BS broadcast that you can watch, but as mentioned above, the main programs of the current BS Premium will continue to be available for viewing on NHK BS.

The reorganization of satellite broadcasting takes into account the decline in license fee income due to lower license fees and a future decrease in the number of households, as well as the need to rationalize and improve the efficiency of operations. Channel 103 used by BS Premium will be discontinued on March 31, 2024.

For four months from December 1st until the suspension of service, channel 103 will be used as a channel to explain and inform users about the relocation of programs and the timing of suspension of service.

A caption informing you of the relocation of the program will be displayed at all times against the background of the video of the program currently being broadcast on BSP4K that has been converted to HD (downconverted). At that time, the audio of the program will be broadcast as is (stereo only) instead of silently. Basically, the background will be a BSP4K program, but if the program is unique to BSP4K and does not have the right to downcon, filler (original program) such as environmental footage will be played in the background.

In addition, Channel 103 will broadcast the last program, “BS Premium Moves! Countdown Special,” live for three hours from 21:00 on November 30th to midnight on December 1st. In the three hours leading up to the birth of NHK BS, which condenses the appeal of BS1 and BS Premium into one, the charm of the new channel and the moment it was born will be broadcast live.

The program will feature performers from popular programs such as Seiko Ito, Sakura Inoue, Hiroshi Miyama, and introduce the history and behind-the-scenes of the program, including nostalgic archive footage of the first broadcast, as well as BS1’s “International Report” In collaboration with Yahoo!, we will feature new appeals of news and sports programs. A live piano performance by Harami-chan will also be broadcast.
