News studio – Vadsø: Fire in industrial buildings

LAST: – The wind has turned and toxic smoke is now blowing towards the buildings in Vadsø, the police in Finnmark write on Twitter at 11.52.

The police ask everyone to close doors, valves and windows in their homes, and to avoid being out in the smoke.

In an update on Twitter at 9 o’clock, the police report that the safety distance has been reduced to 100 meters.

– All emergency services are on site and the fire brigade is working to put out the fire.

This is what operations manager Jørgen Haukland Hansen tells Dagbladet, after it started burning on Monday morning in an industrial building in Vadsø harbor.

According to the police, there are no people inside the building.

– It burns well, but the fire service says that they have control in relation to spread. There is also a lot of smoke from the building, but the wind direction right now means that the smoke goes out of the city, says the operations manager.

He also encourages people to keep their distance from the fire, as they have no control over it.

The duty manager at the 110 exchange in Finnmark, Jarleif Sørensen, tells Dagbladet that the fire service receives assistance from the Coast Guard, the Civil Defense, as well as a fire truck from Vadsø airport.

Fire Chief Steffen Holsbø informs iFinnmark that due to what is in the building, there is a certain risk of explosion.

The reason for this is that there are three cubic meters of oil inside the building.

Police officer Gudrun Haugan, who is on the scene, tells the same newspaper that they have evacuated the nearest buildings.

– Now the most important thing is to put out the fire and have control over it. The fire service is in charge, while the police have an overview. We have warned people on the island to stay inside and asked them to close doors and windows. In addition, we ask that people follow the smoke if the wind turns, says Haugan.
