News Corp and Facebook agree to pay for news content in Australia

Sydney (Australia), Mar 16 (EFE) .- The multinational news media News Corp and the technology company Facebook announced on Tuesday an agreement to supply news to the social network in Australia in exchange for the payment of an unspecified amount.

The agreement, for a period of three years, comes after the conflict between Facebook and the Australian government as a result of a law that obliges large technology companies to negotiate this type of payments to local media.

Facebook even blocked the publication of news on its platform in Australia for about 8 days, which also affected several NGOs and government agencies, although on February 26 it restored the service by reaching an agreement with the authorities.

News Corp, which controls about two-thirds of all publications in the oceanic nation, said in a statement that the agreement includes the national newspaper “The Australian”, the portal “news.com.au”, as well as numerous regional headers.

“The deal with Facebook is a milestone in the transformation of journalism’s terms of trade and will have a material and significant impact on our Australian news businesses,” said Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp.

Thomson thanked the Australian Executive for their stance in “taking a principled position in favor of Australian publications, large and small, rural and urban. This digital outcome has been in development for more than a decade.”

News Corp also briefly noted today that the technology company also reached a side agreement with cable television channel Sky News Australia.

Facebook had already reached agreements at the end of February in Australia with the publishing groups Schwartz Media (which publishes “Saturday Paper” and “Monthly magazine”), Solstice Media (owners of “New Daily” and “City Mag”) and Private Media ( editor of “Crikey”), published the Australian press without disclosing details of the contract.
