Enter Prince Saudi Arabia Muhammad bin Salman to the Premier League, through Public Investment Fund (PIF) who bought Newcastle United, make cake a number of parties. Starting from Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancée to fellow Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United.

The disbursement of funds from the Saudi Arabian consortium to Newcastle occurred in the middle of the week with a value of around 300 million pounds or approximately Rp. 5.7 trillion. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, or PIF, is reportedly providing 80% of the funds as agreed. Prior to this the controversy had been around for some time. Until finally the agreement materialized, controversy was still present. Most importantly, it has to do with human rights.

With that step BBC said that, “Saudi Arabia is accused of trying to distract from the country’s poor human rights record.”

The allegations, among others, come from Amnesty International, which accuses Saudi Arabia of “trying to divert the issue by involving itself in the glamorous world of top-flight football.” Amnesty International considers that Saudi Arabia has implemented a strategy known as ‘self-cleaning through sport’.

Amanda Staveley, who heads the PIF consortium, denied the takeover was linked to an attempt to make sport a ‘laundering’ of human rights issues.

“Our partners are not Saudi countries, this is PIF. It took me four years to get here and I have worked with a great team. I trust in their assessment of what is good for Newcastle,” he said.

The Premier League authorities also confirmed that they had obtained legally binding guarantees that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would not control Newcastle. In other words, referring to the statement, Newcastle United operates as a club owned by PIF, and not the state of Saudi Arabia – although the majority of its funds come from there.
