The bill aims to ensure after Britain ‘s withdrawal from the European Union (ES) free and unhindered trade between all four components of the United Kingdom.
The government points out that if the breakthrough in negotiations with Brussels on future relations between the two sides is not reached in order to prevent the introduction of barriers to trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, it may be necessary to abandon the Brexit agreement.
This has provoked outrage in Brussels, as well as concerns from MEPs that abandoning an international agreement could damage London’s reputation. However, the potential uprising in the ranks of Johnson’s own Tories has been stifled by the government’s agreement to give Members a de facto veto over such a decision.
Although some Conservative MPs, such as former Prime Minister Teresa Maye, have not been persuaded, the bill has reached its final stage in the lower house of parliament, where a final vote is expected next Tuesday.
This will be followed by a two-month review of the bill in the House of Lords, where Johnson has no majority. Many coups have expressed great concern about the bill and may try to remove the provision on additional government powers from it. However, any amendments must be supported by both chambers of parliament.
