New York’s first Latin ‘rockette’

The show of the rockettes is one of the great attractions of New York that is presented at Radio City Music Hall.

These dancers have always been characterized by their ability and symmetry when executing their dance routines. But it was not until the 1990s that its cast selected a dancer of Latin origin: Lillian Colon.

Lilly Colón was the first Latina rockettee.

“I never imagined that I would be the first rockette Latin never. But I entered like any other girl: I auditioned, I came, I started working and I never imagined that I would open doors,” explains Colón.

Until then, when one was selected rockette diversity was not a factor considered. However, Lillian Colón claims not to have suffered racial discrimination when she joined this select group: “There is no difference between any of us. We are all the same. Just as we see ourselves on stage, we are also the same behind the stage. We are a We are all family: we meet our husbands, our children and we enter into a family atmosphere and a lot of love”.

Lilly Colón had a lot of work and discipline to be a rockettee.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about this talented niuyorican whether to become rockette It was a definitive step in her career, but it did not define her as an artist: “I have done many things before. I went to Mexico and worked there, I did it in California too. I was a choreographer for Menudo and did more things. But of course, being the first rockette America is a source of pride. And now, I have my own show, a one woman show, and also my book. And I hope that inspires the youth that comes after me.”

Lilly Colón also participated in the film: In The Heights.

Lillian Colón also recalled her experience as a choreographer for the famous group Menudo: “Ricky Martin was about 14… No, 12 years old when I started with him and we started here at Radio City, we opened here. And being a choreographer for a famous group that is Puerto Rican, from my country… Well, from the country of my parents because I am a New Yorker, but my parents were born there. And being in this country and having been a choreographer for a Puerto Rican team also makes me very proud.”
