New York wants penalties for hospitals if vaccination is delayed

New York state governor announces penalties for hospitals that fail to use their vaccine allocation within a week. “I don’t want the vaccine in a refrigerator or freezer,” said Andrew Cuomo. “I want to have him in someone’s arms.”

The hospitals in his state have so far used less than half of their allotted doses. According to the US epidemic agency CDC, the proportion is even lower: According to their data, only a fifth of the 896,000 doses delivered in New York have been vaccinated so far.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meanwhile, announced that it was premature to consider changing vaccine doses or periods. One follows the discussions about halving the dose and a longer period between the first and second vaccination, said the authority. However, the available data does not provide a solid basis for such steps. Therefore, they would pose a significant risk of public health risk.
