New York turns white after big snow storm

The first major blizzard of the season has blanketed the northeastern United States with snow. Due to this big snow storm, New York is currently turning white. A record amount of snow fell on Thursday, providing both pleasure and great inconvenience.

The most snow fell in Binghamtom in New York state, according to the National Weather Service: 114 centimeters. That is exceptional for this time of year. According to meteorologist Bob Oravec, it could even be a record. “It’s a historic storm for inland areas,” he said. “In an hour, four or five centimeters fell in some places, which is huge.”

In New York City, a smaller layer was formed, measuring about 15 to 25 centimeters. Mayor Bill de Blasio said there hasn’t been that much snow in 24 hours since January 2016. Photos posted on social media show residents enjoying the snow and pulling out the sleds and cross-country skis. Snowmen have been made en masse by children who are free from school.

Storm warnings

The authorities had called on the 50 million inhabitants of the region in advance to stay at home as much as possible. Motorists were also advised not to go on the road because of the snow storm. Dozens of flights were canceled and many trains were also canceled.

At least six people have been killed in traffic accidents.
