A tiger in a New York zoo contracted the coronavirus. The four-year-old Malaysian tiger cat Nadia had tested positive for the virus, share the operators of the zoological garden in the Bronx on Sunday with.
“It is – to our knowledge – the first time that a wild animal has been infected with Covid-19 by a person,” said the zoo’s chief veterinarian, Paul Calle, of National Geographic magazine.
Full recovery expected
A carer probably carried the virus but showed no symptoms. The zoo has been closed to visitors for around three weeks due to the corona crisis.
Nadia developed a dry cough and was therefore tested as a precaution. Her sister Azul as well as two Siberian tigers and three lions also showed symptoms, but had not been tested.
The animals had a little less appetite, but otherwise they were fine, it was said. They do not know how the disease will develop in big cats and will observe the animals closely, but expect a full recovery.
