They are supposed to supply the residents with food and clean public facilities in a newly established security zone with a radius of 1.6 kilometers.
Schools, places of worship and other meeting places will be closed in the area for two weeks, Cuomo said. The governor also assured that the area would not be quarantined. Shops would remain open, residents could come and go.
The protective measures and the deployment of the National Guard are necessary, said Cuomo. “It’s a dramatic move, but it’s the largest accumulation (of coronavirus infections) in the country. It’s literally a matter of life and death.”
So far, more than 170 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in New York State, 108 of them in Westchester County, where New Rochelle is located. The city of 80,000 is located near New York City.
