US President Donald Trump on Friday evening approved a declaration of a “major disaster” zone for New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in the United States.
Trump’s order opens federal support for state and local government efforts in areas affected by COVID-19, the White House said in a statement.
It also gives New York residents who have been affected by the disease access to crisis counseling.
More than 10,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported as of noon Saturday in New York State where 56 people have died from the epidemic.
Last week Trump declared the coronavirus outbreak a national health emergency, freeing up billions of dollars in federal aid.
Trump has already signed two coronavirus stimulus packages of over $ 100 billion combined. The third stimulus bill negotiated by senators will cost around $ 1,000 billion.
The legislation was sent to Congressional Democrats Thursday night, but lawmakers left Friday night without a finalized bill. They are expected to resume talks on Saturday.
