Panic in New York. Yesterday morning local time, a shootout broke out near the Empire State Building, on the sidewalks that connect the city’s 5th Avenue and 34th Street. In other words, one of the most touristic areas of New York.
Today, we know more about the circumstances of the tragedy. Indeed, it was a 53-year-old man who had recently been dismissed who opened fire in the street. He then killed one of his former colleagues before being shot by the police. This “disgruntled employee (…) shot three times on a former colleague, and killed him,” said Ray Kelly, the police chief. According to the latter, the victim, aged 41, would be the former boss of the suspect.
Nine wounded
In total, the shooting left two dead as well as nine injured. Yesterday evening, when the drama was announced, the results were not yet certain and the ” New York Post Claimed, for example, that a woman, wounded by a bullet, had succumbed to her injuries.
During a press conference, Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York, spoke of a “terrible tragedy”. “New York is, as you know, the safest big city in the country (…) but we are not immune to the national problem of armed violence”, he lamented, a few weeks after a another massacre, which occurred in the United States: in fact, a young man had entered a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and had killed twelve people. More than fifty other spectators were injured.
