“New York Relaxes Homeless Shelter Rules Ahead of Expected Increase in Migrants”

NY decided to relax the rules that regulate how to shelter homeless people before the massive arrival of migrants to the city and the expectation that the number will skyrocket when the expiration of this Thursday Title 42the rule that allows the United States to carry out express expulsions for public health reasons.

Late on Wednesday, the mayor of New York, Eric Adamssigned an emergency executive order temporarily suspending parts of a law that requires the Big Apple to give a bed to anyone who needs it.

The movement does not go against that right, but rather eliminates some of the requirements that the city has imposed in order to be able to serve the large number of homeless people after the arrival of thousands of asylum seekers in the last few months.

For example, the Adams decree suspends parts of the law that until now required the city to guarantee that homeless families had their own kitchen and bathroom, so they could not be placed in communal shelters, and relaxes the time limits that the Mayor’s Office has to give a bed to those who ask for it.

The Mayor’s Office stresses that the arrival of thousands of asylum seekers in recent months, many of them Venezuelans, has created an “unprecedented humanitarian crisis” that requires “extraordinary measures to respond to the immediate needs” of these people and, at the time, continue serving the city’s homeless population.

According to Adams, the city received 4,200 more people last week and is welcoming an average of 500 new people every day, with days in which the number is even double.

In addition to municipal shelters, this has created extraordinary needs in the educational network, and there are schools that have had to open “ad hoc” classes to accommodate Latino children who have arrived en masse in some areas of Manhattan.

All of this occurs before the expiration of the Title 42a step that local authorities fear will multiply the number of migrants and asylum seekers entering from the Mexican border.

According to municipal figures, since last spring almost 61,000 migrants have arrived in New York and currently some 37,000 are housed by the Mayor’s Office in hotels and other facilities.

Many of these people arrived in the Big Apple on buses chartered by the authorities of Texasa policy highly criticized by Adams, who, however, has also resorted to facilitating the travel of migrants to other places such as Canada to alleviate the situation in the city.

In recent days, it has also been known that Adams plans to send migrants to hotels in Rockland County, north of the city, which has been directly rejected by local authorities, who are trying to block it.
