New York Police Chief Rodney Harrison announces retirement this year – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORKNew York Police Department Chief Rodney Harrison, the force’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, will retire at the end of this year.

Commissioner Dermot Shea announced Harrison’s retirement Thursday morning, saying he will resign on December 30 after 30 years in the force.

He rose rapidly in recent years, becoming chief of patrol in January 2018, chief of detectives in December 2019, and head of department just 10 months ago.

His wife is a retired lieutenant with the New York Police Department and two of his daughters recently became patrol officers.

Harrison becomes the second department head to retire this year, after Terence Monahan assumed a role as public safety adviser with the city last February.

The department’s top ranks must undergo another imminent shakeup, and Mayor-elect Eric Adams is expected to announce his election for police commissioner in the coming days.
