New York: Police arrested and charged after allegedly illegal stranglehold

A New York police officer has been arrested and charged following a stranglehold incident while arresting an African American. The 39-year-old had to answer for attempted strangulation, among other things, said the district attorney for the borough of Queens, Melinda Katz. After the charges were read out, the policeman was initially released.

He was suspended from duty over the weekend after videos were released that appear to show that he used an illegal stranglehold on a man lying on the ground.

The 35-year-old African American was injured in the Queens borough arrest on Sunday and taken to hospital. The police operation took place among other things because of suspected disturbance of the peace.

The city of New York passed a law last week that prohibits the use of stranglehold and makes it a criminal offense. After the death of the African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis on May 25, there were mass protests against racism and police brutality across the country.

Cities and districts have announced police reforms, such as the elimination of controversial practices such as stranglehold. Floyd died after a white police officer pressed his knee on the back of his neck for almost nine minutes.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of the text mentioned arrests. In truth, the African American and the police officer were arrested. We have revised the text accordingly.
