‘New York, New York’, the ‘Resistiré’ of the Big Apple | Videos

The song doesn’t talk about holding on, like I will resist of the Dynamic Duo. Nor to lean. But it manages to convey that sentiment in times of pandemic if it is sung in the Big Apple. “I want to be part of it, New York, New York,” New Yorkers have sung this week from windows, balconies and rooftops, making use of New York, New York by Frank Sinatra, to pay tribute to healthcare personnel during the coronavirus crisis.

The initiative was promoted by the coro Peace of Heart, who performed the song live this Thursday through the Internet and two local radio stations: the WKCR and the WBAI. The song began at 19:02 (local time) after the two minutes of applause that the inhabitants perform daily, just like in Spain, to thank the hospital workers for their effort and dedication.

While on the residential streets of the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, residents went outside their doors to hear and sing the song, many of Manhattan’s residents, lacking open spaces, climbed to the top of the rooftops or the small balconies that form the traditional fire exits.

The initiative’s Facebook profile was launched this week. Choir member Robert Hornsby said more than 50,000 people joined and another 2,000 pledged to participate. “As members of a choir singing to bring people together, this is our way of creating a greater sense of community, while maintaining the appropriate physical distance,” said choir co-director Andrew Dykeman in a statement. .

According to the Health Department, the city already has more than 117,000 infected with coronavirus and about 7,600 deceased.
