New York Jets fire defensive coordinator Gregg Williams after questionable play call

The New York Jets have sacked Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. Various US media report this unanimously.

Williams apparently had his play call at the end of the game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. With a score of 28:24 for the Jets, Williams had eight men attacked by lightning 13 seconds before the end of a third-and-ten at the 46-yard line. Henry Ruggs beat Lamar Jackson in one-on-one and caught the decisive touchdown to victory for the Raiders.

The Jets missed their first win of the current season and remain the only team without a success. After the recent defeat, due to the extraordinary play call from Williams, it was even speculated that New York might have lost the game on purpose in order to secure the first pick in the 2021 draft.

Williams has been the Jets’ Defensive Coordinator since 2019. The 62-year-old had previously made headlines at other stations. In New Orleans he was responsible for “Bounty Gate”, in which players received bonuses for injuries to opposing athletes. In Cleveland, the Browns ended the 2017 season with zero wins and 16 defeats, with Williams serving as defensive coordinator for both teams.
