New York Implements Strict Regulations on Airbnb with Local Law Number 18

Local law number 18, which came into force at the beginning of the month, “is so strict that it not only limits the operation of Airbnb in the city”, assure the Wired website. In practice, “it almost completely prohibits it for many travelers and hosts”since drastic rules apply for any rental of less than 30 days.

From now on, all hosts who offer short-term rentals in New York are required to register with the city and pay a tax ($145 to be paid every two years). Even more restrictive, only those who live in the accommodation they rent (and are present when someone is staying) can register with the authorities. Also forget about large families, since guests can only accommodate two people at the same time, in a room which must remain accessible. This compulsory registration with the municipality “introduces a clear procedure for hosts who respect the city’s long-standing laws and protects travelers from illegal and dangerous accommodations”, estimated a New York official. And this, “by putting an end to the proliferation of illegal short-term rentals”.
