Fake Russian-German millionaire Anna “Delvey” Sorokin, who deceived New York’s financial elite by posing as a wealthy heiress, inspiring a Netflix series, was released Friday night from a detention center and could be expelled from the United States.

German national and born in Russia near Moscow, Anna Sorokin is the daughter of a truck driver and shopkeeper who emigrated to Germany in 2007. She attended the world of fashion in London and Paris before arriving in New York in 2013 for Fashion Week. Arrested in 2017 and sentenced two years later, Anna Sorokin inspired television producer Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal”) to make a hit miniseries on Netflix, “Inventing Anna,” starring Julia Garner in the title role.
