“It’s time for New York City to take a big drink of progress and quench the thirst of our people. Let’s put water bottle refill stations on fire hydrants throughout New York City,” said the Chelsea politician, who added that the initiative could also serve as a step to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks that affect health.
The legislator mentioned that just consuming a sugary soft drink every day increases the risk that a person may suffer from type 2 diabetes in adulthood by 26%.
“We have to end our addiction to plastic use in one go. It is estimated that there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic weighing more than 250,000 tons in our oceans and if the current trend of consuming plastic continues the same, there will be more plastic than fish in the seas in 2050, something that should horrify us to everyone,” he stressed.

“In the midst of this urban frenzy, it’s easy to overlook simple things that can have a big impact, like making drinking water available in more public spaces, but unfortunately, there aren’t enough public fountains to fill water bottles in the city. New York City,” said the councilman. “That’s why I introduced legislation that would require the City to install water bottle refill fountains at hydrants, starting with five in each county.”
