New York City Housing Settlement Agreement to Change Apartment Lotteries and Increase Access for Residents

A housing department settlement to settle a lawsuit will make it easier for New York City residents to access apartment lotteries.

Currently, many of the housing lotteries open in New York City allocate half of the apartments to people who live in the neighborhood where the buildings are located.

A lawsuit filed in 2015 by the Anti-Discrimination Center organization pointed out that this requirement perpetuated the segregation of certain communities such as Hispanics and constituted a violation of the fair housing law.

On January 22, the City and the plaintiffs reached an agreement.

It establishes that the housing department will reduce the percentage of homes that are assigned exclusively to residents close to the buildings.

According to the agreement, which is available onlinewithin a period of 5 years the number of apartments assigned to residents will decrease from 50 to 20 percent.

By April 30, 2029 the number should drop to 15 percent.

This means that New Yorkers in general will have a better chance of being chosen in lotteries regardless of their current place of residence.

The modification will be carried out gradually.

Currently, the New York City Housing Lottery has housing lotteries open to rent more than 700 apartments in various boroughs.
