The gradual reopening of businesses in the American economic capital, confined since March 22, began on Monday. The first stage concerns the construction and manufacturing sectors. The terraces and hairdressers will follow within 15 days.

“This is the day when New York begins to reopen and I am so happy to see that day finally arrived. “Exactly 100 days after the confirmation of the first case in the economic capital of the United States, epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic in the United States with more than 20,000 dead, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, is delighted that it officially begins its deconfinement, Monday, June 8. All New York indicators reportan epidemic now controlled. For the mayor, Bill de Blasio, all the credit goes to New Yorkers and their respect for containment measures.

The reopening of this metropolis, in lethargy since March 22, promises to be very gradual, limited in a first phase to construction and the manufacturing sector. Open stores will have to enforce safety distances. Between 200,000 and 400,000 people return to their places of work.

Within 15 days, the authorities hope to move on to a second stage which will allow eating on the terrace or returning to the hairdresser. But not yet in restaurants or theaters, for which no resumption date has been set.

Covid-19: New York begins its gradual deconfinement

Limited reopening due to looting

As long as the infection rate does not start to rise again. Many wonder if protests against racial inequalities which have agitated the city – and the whole of the United States – for two weeks will revive the epidemic.

“The city has come back to life with the demonstrations (…), this coincides with the first phase and that’s good,” Brandy Bligen, 70-year-old retiree, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). He demonstrated on Saturday, and planned to take Governor Cuomo’s advice, calling on protesters to get tested quickly. But that did not prevent him from being in the metro on Monday morning, a simple mask on his face, compulsory.

The reopening of this capital of consumerism seems all the more limited for the moment as the windows of many stores are protected with plywood since the looting that shook Manhattan last Monday. The curfew imposed by the city has only been lifted since Sunday.
