The first illustrations of what the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte campus will look like were unveiled. The expected complex arises from an association between Atrium Health y Wake Forest Baptist.
Eugene Woods, CEO of Atrium, presented the images of the seven-story building, whose promise is to be “a next-generation academic health care system.” The Wake Charlotte School of Medicine is scheduled to be available in 2021 or 2022, although the project’s start date and costs are not known.
Charlotte’s medical school could house about 1,600 educators and 3,200 students. However, overall Woods referred to one study, conducted by Tripp Umbach, Pittsburgh Health Consultant, which calculated that the campus can “generate more than 20,000 well-paying jobs and have an economic impact of $ 2.5 billion” by 2040.
World-class innovation and clinical expertise
The Atrium spokesperson indicated during the presentation that “Together, we will create a ‘Silicon Valley for healthcare’, where innovation meets broad clinical experience.”
Those involved in the project maintain that the medical school will be in the top 20. It will be recognized as the most modern, innovative, profitable and sustainable available in the Charlotte area.
The projections do not estimate that the Wake Charlotte School of Medicine campus will utilize the human resources of the Winston-Salem campus. This has been one of the main concerns since the announcement of the project. On the contrary, it is proposed that the professors of the medical school who are in Winston-Salem remain. That way, Charlotte Medical School would recruit new staff as well as utilize providers available within the Atrium hospital system.
