The Herne Academy for Self-Help and Civic Engagement is a joint initiative of the Citizen Self-Help Center (BüZ) and the Volunteer Office of the City of Herne. Civic engagement – whether in a club, in a self-help group or in the family and neighborhood – requires special skills, information and special knowledge. The academy has been imparting these qualifications since 2008 in regular information events, advanced training courses and discussion groups.

Addressed to all citizens

The further education offer of the academy is aimed at all interested citizens of Herne. However, people who are already involved in civic activities or who want to become involved in the future are particularly invited. In addition, full-time employees of social and health facilities and services are also welcome.

The six-month program begins on Monday, February 27, 2023 at 5 p.m. with the event “Promotion of health self-help. What options are there?” – a continuation of the series on working in and with self-help groups. The venue is the Citizens’ Self-Help Center, Rathausstrasse 6. In the one-and-a-half-hour course, participants learn everything to do with project funding. Dirk Ebertz from “VIACTIV” reports on the various support options through health insurance companies and their associations, which have been possible for health-related self-help since 1992 in accordance with Section 20h of the Social Security Code V.

Messenger training

On Thursday, April 20, 2023, the training continues with the training “WhatsApp & Co. – Which messenger services are suitable for self-help groups?”. The data security of messenger services will also be discussed in the Citizens’ Self-Help Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m. – especially in relation to patient protection in self-help. In a lecture, Florian Berger presents various services and discusses their advantages and disadvantages with the participants.

“Tips and tricks for using your smartphone” is the topic of the third event. This will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SeniorenInternetc@fé, Karlstraße 7. Since many volunteers are dependent on the Internet and smartphones at work, but often still have difficulties with handling and operation, the SeniorenInternetc@fé offers a beginner’s course. An internet-enabled mobile phone is required to participate.

Association law and Co.

The last event of the Herner Academy in the first half of the year is the advanced training course “Association Law and Legal Basis in Volunteering”. This will take place on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m. as part of an online event. At the workshop, volunteers and associations can ask the resident lawyer Peter Bornfelder questions that they have on the subject of volunteering and law.
