New Technology Helps Diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease in Hong Kong

Every September is World Dementia Month, and 60% to 70% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease. In Hong Kong, about one in ten elderly people suffer from dementia, and the common age of onset is over 70 years old. With the aging of the population, the increase in public awareness of the disease, and the advancement of diagnostic techniques, the incidence has been on the rise in recent years.

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is the accumulation of abnormal substances such as amyloid-beta protein and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, and the formation of plaques, which leads to nerve cell dysfunction and atrophy of brain cells. This disease mainly affects the hippocampus of the brain.

People with a history of genetic disease or rare genetic genes are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It is also associated with poor living habits and chronic diseases, such as smoking, lack of sleep or exercise, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

At present, the medical field has no cure for the damaged brain nerve cells, and the cognitive function of patients may gradually degenerate with the disease. Alzheimer’s disease is divided into multiple stages. Patients in the early stage are generally asymptomatic and usually only detected by clinical examination; in the middle stage, mild cognitive impairment will appear. The typical symptom is short-term memory deterioration, but patients can usually still perform daily activities Activities; Cognitive functions of advanced patients, such as calculation ability, character recognition, visual-spatial judgment, etc. will be affected, and even lose self-care and verbal expression ability, and eventually may need to stay in bed for a long time.

If the doctor suspects that the patient has Alzheimer’s disease, in addition to the clinical examination, a questionnaire for cognitive assessment will also be arranged to judge the condition more comprehensively. In addition, with the development of medical treatment, there are now many new technologies that can assist in the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, such as the detection of specific biomarkers or genes through blood tests, magnetic resonance scanning can check the degree of hippocampal atrophy, and the use of Isotope PiB combined with positron scanning can understand the accumulation of amyloid beta.

Alzheimer’s disease has not yet been cured. The traditional method is to use drugs to slow down the rate of cognitive degradation through interdisciplinary teamwork, and arrange psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, etc. according to the patient’s condition intervention. In recent years, the newly developed monoclonal antibody drug can remove abnormal proteins in the brain, bringing new hope for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, Hong Kong can apply for the drug through the “Designated Patient Drug Use Scheme”.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and early management and control of chronic diseases can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
