New Study Reveals Ongoing Brain Injury in Covid-19 Patients, Even After Recovery

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Although it generally attacks the respiratory tract, Covid-19 can also cause a number of problems in various other areas of the body. In the brain, for example, Covid-19 is known to cause lasting damage for several months after the infection occurs.

These findings were revealed in a study published in the journal Nature Communications. Through this study, the research team conducted analysis and examination of 800 patients from England who were hospitalized due to Covid-19.

Half of these patients experienced new neurological problems after being exposed to Covid-19. The research team examined brain injury markers, inflammatory serum proteins, antibodies and brain injury proteins in all patients.

The study results showed that patients produced more inflammatory proteins when they were still positive for Covid-19. While still positive, the patients also had higher levels of brain injury markers in the blood.

Surprisingly enough, several months after patients were declared cured of Covid-19, they still had markers in their blood that indicated ongoing brain injury. In fact, the results of routine blood inflammation tests did not show any inflammation in the patient.

According to the research team, conditions like this are most often found in Covid-19 patients who also suffer from neurological problems during their illness. For example, patients who experience brain complications triggered by Covid-19.

“This indicates the possibility of ongoing inflammation and injury in the brain, which cannot be detected by blood tests for inflammation,” said the Director of the Infection Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Liverpool, Benedict Michael PhD, as reported WebMD on Wednesday (3/1/2024).
