What is the Fasting Mimicking Diet?

The fasting mimicking diet is a 5-day eating plan specifically designed to emulate the effects of a water-only fast. This diet regimen is high in unsaturated fats and low in calories, protein, and carbohydrates. By providing essential nutrients, this diet grants individuals the opportunity to experience the benefits of fasting while ensuring a more manageable and sustainable approach.

Developed by esteemed USC Leonard Davis School Professor Valter Longo, the senior author of this groundbreaking study, the fasting mimicking diet presents a hopeful avenue for anti-aging strategies.

First Study to Reverse Biological Aging through Diet

The study aimed to investigate the effects of the fasting mimicking diet on individuals. It included two clinical trial populations, consisting of men and women aged 18 to 70. Participants following the fasting mimicking diet were provided with plant-based soups, energy bars, energy drinks, chip snacks, and tea for five consecutive days. Additionally, they received a high-quality dietary supplement packed with essential minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids. The control groups were instructed to follow either a normal or Mediterranean-style diet.

“This is the first study to show that a food-based intervention that does not require chronic dietary or other lifestyle changes can make people biologically younger, based on both changes in risk factors for aging and disease and on a validated method developed by the Levine group to assess biological age,” stated Professor Valter Longo, highlighting the unprecedented findings.

Clinical studies investigating the effects of the fasting mimicking diet revealed a remarkable average reduction of biological age by 2.5 years among the participants.
