New strain of covid-19 forces another lockdown in London

UNITED KINGDOM.- The head of the English Medical Authority, Chris Whitty, reported this week of a new, rapidly spreading strain of the coronavirus discovered on the island. Due to the speed of contagion, the south of England, including London, will return to confinement.

Whitty said members of an expert group told him and the government that they fear “the new strain may spread faster.”

“We alert the WHO,” he added. The expert also added that there is no evidence that the new strain causes more deaths or affects the effectiveness of vaccines.

At a press conference, the prime minister Boris Johnson announced that London and the southeast of England will return to confinement as of Sunday morning to try to stop a rise in covid-19 infections, attributed to a new strain discovered there.

“It appears that this spread is fueled by a new variant of the virus,” which is transmitted “much more easily,” he reported. He also added that “nothing indicates that it is more deadly or that it causes a more severe form of the disease” or that it reduces the effectiveness of vaccines.

In addition to restrictions such as quarantine and the closure of non-essential trade, all movements outside that area, whether within the national territory or to go abroad, will be prohibited.

In the areas governed by the maximum alert, meetings between members of different households may not be held and in the rest of the areas they will have to be held in a single day.

The United Kingdom is the country in Europe hardest hit by the pandemic along with Italy, with more than 67,000 deaths. Added to this, it has already exceeded the threshold of 2 million cases.
