New smartphone flagship with 5G and support for 8K video

The Japanese manufacturer Sharp has presented a new smartphone flagship: As the name suggests, the Aquos R5G also supports the new 5G mobile communications standard. The device can also record videos in 8K. Otherwise there are a few design peculiarities, because Sharp refuses to accept some trends. So you put a physical fingerprint scanner on the front under the display. You also stick to a waterdrop notch.

Where we are on the front: The Pro-IGZO screen with a 6.5-inch diagonal has an impressive 3,168 x 1,440 pixels. Sharp names a maximum brightness of 1,000 cd / m2 and also support for Dolby Vision. The speakers, in turn, should be certified with Dolby Atmos. The Sharp Aquos R5G should still be available in spring 2020 in the colors blue, black and white.

The other features are not to be sidelined: Sharp relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB storage space. In addition, the smartphone is resistant to dust and water according to protection class IP68. Sharp also mentions Wi-Fi 6, NFC and facial recognition as further features. The front camera should come up with 16.4 megapixels.

The quad main camera in turn offers 48 (wide-angle, f / 2.9, OIS, 120 ° view) + 12.2 (wide-angle, f / 1.7) + 12.2 (telephoto, f / 2.7, 2x optical zoom) megapixels plus one additional depth sensor. There are also the usual AI gadgets on board to recognize different scenes or objects.

The new Sharp Aquos R5G measures approx. 162 x 75 x 8.9 mm and weighs approx. 189 g. It is open whether and when the Japanese flagship smartphone could also appear in Germany. So far, Sharp has only vaguely confirmed “Spring 2020” as the release period for Japan – the price is still outstanding.
