Spain, Italy and New York recover

  • Good news coronavirus. The pandemic’s three biggest epicenters gave good news: New York had the lowest daily death toll since March 31.
  • For the first time since the coronavirus arrived in Spain, the number of cured exceeded the number of new infections
  • In Italy the number of recovered by little equals that of new infections

Good news coronavirus. New York reported its lowest number of daily COVID-19 deaths in several weeks. The state reported 442 deaths Thursday, which is the lowest daily total since March 31, when it recorded 391 deaths a day caused by the outbreak.

“It’s an unimaginable level and it’s going down a little bit, but it’s still devastating news,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said Friday in his daily press session.

The total number of people hospitalized in the state continues to drop slowly, falling to 14,000, although the number of people who go to hospitals has remained largely unchanged, Cuomo said.

On the other hand, the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, criticized President Donald Trump for his affirmations on the possible use of disinfectants or ultraviolet rays to treat COVID-19. The mayor said it is “sad when you have to correct the president of the United States” in basic science.

Trump said Thursday that investigators were analyzing the effects of disinfectants on the coronavirus and wondered aloud if they could be injected into people. He also suggested that radiating ultraviolet lights “into the body” could be an effective treatment.

Before the press on Friday, De Blasio referred a question about Trump’s comments to the municipal health commissioner, doctor Oxiris Barbot, who warned that the disinfectants could be harmful if ingested or applied to the skin.

“It’s sad when you have to correct the president of the United States on a science and health issue, but I think Dr. Barbot did a good job of responding to the president,” said De Blasio.

Cuomo, who met with the president this week, declined to address Trump’s comments directly in his own briefing.

“I don’t know much about UV rays,” Cuomo said. “It is not my job. It is not my business. ”

Spain registers more cured than new patients of COVID-19

For the first time since the coronavirus arrived in Spain, the number of cured people exceeded that of new infections, authorities said on Friday.

They specified that in the last 24 hours 2,796 new infections were registered, while 3,105 patients were cured.

“With all the efforts we have made, the evolution of the epidemic obviously begins to be where it should be,” said the coordinator of the Ministry of Health’s emergency center, Fernando Simón.

Spain registered 367 new coronavirus deaths for a total of 22,524 and the government is studying how to end a strict quarantine that has lasted for more than 40 days.

In the next few hours, health officials from the 17 regions of Spain and the central government will analyze proposals to gradually resume economic activity. Authorities have said the process will depend on how the regions meet certain health criteria.
