New registrations start in March. No date and no separating dashes – The Economic Journal

New registrations will start to be seen on Portuguese roads from March. For old registrations to cease to exist, the current model must exhaust the possibilities in the current format (two digits, two letters, two digits). Only then will the new registrations (two letters, two digits, two letters) begin to be issued, which should happen from March.

“Of the current model number plate, consisting of two groups of two digits and one group of two letters, were still available to be allocated at the beginning of this year, about 60,220 registrations,” according to the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT). ).

“This model, which from May 25, 2005 to date, is expected to have reserved 5,109,263 registrations, will expire at the end of next February,” adds this public entity.

New registrations no longer have the yellow bar containing the month and year in which registrations were registered. But they also no longer have “separate character group strokes”, while maintaining a “character spacing”.

Regarding the end of the month and year of enrollment, IMT points out that Portugal was the only one to present these elements on the registration plate, which generated “misinterpretation” in other countries, as this element is “used in many countries to indicate the expiry date of the registration number and not the year and month of the vehicle, which has nothing to do with the registration number ”.

Already the number plates of mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles will now display in its upper left corner the distinctive symbol of Portugal (P) as well as the 12 stars of the European Union on a blue background.
