New Predator Dinosaur Found, Had Small Arms Like T-rex

KOMPAS.com – Paleontologist at Argentina have discovered a new species dinosaur who has disproportionately short sleeves like his Tyrannosaurus rex.

A new species of dinosaur which was later named Meraxes gigas it was found in what is now the northern Patagonia region of Argentina.

“When M.gigas live, the area is hot and humid with lots of waterways and vegetation, including large trees,” said Juan Canale, project leader at the Ernesto Bachmann Museum of Paleontology in Neuquén, Argentina.

Reported from CNN, Friday (8/7/2022); Meraxes gigas was the top predator of its time. Dinosaur it is capable of growing up to 11 meters and weighing more than four tons.

M.gigas sitself is known to be a carnivore from the Carcharodontosauridae dinosaur group that lived in the Cretaceous period or about 145 to 66 million years ago.

Over the past 30 years, a large number of Carcharodontosauridae fossils have indeed been found, but little is known about their skulls, arms, or legs.

The mystery finally began to be revealed thanks to the findings M. gigas whose fossils are very complete and able to reveal the unexpected.

“For the first time, we know in great detail about certain parts of the anatomy of this giant carnivorous dinosaur,” Canale said.

The researchers found nearly complete forelimbs, which allowed them to conclude that M. gigas had small arms for a dinosaur of that size. This feature is similar to that of T-rex.

They also found a nearly complete skull and legs, allowing researchers to explain how this group of dinosaurs evolved.
