New York City is struggling to control the pandemic and advance the vaccination process against COVID-19 and will now also face a severe winter storm this week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a severe snowstorm threatens to cover the streets of this city and the rest of the northeastern United States after hitting Washington DC last week.

The service warned New Yorkers that there would be significant snowfall on Monday.

The NWS also issued a winter storm watch for an area from Virginia to Maine, which is home to tens of millions of people.

The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, decreed a state of emergency in the city of more than eight million people, where non-essential travel was limited and roads were cleared.

On New Jersey, in a part of Connecticut and south of New York, a snow cover of between 45 and 60 centimeters is expected, according to the NWS.

Before the arrival of the storm, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency, giving authorities the ability to close roads, evacuate homes, and obtain the necessary equipment for public safety.

He also ordered the suspension of public transportation throughout the state until Monday.

“Charge your devices and if you experience power outages, report them immediately,” he wrote on Twitter.

The storm, which left snowfall of up to 1.8 meters in mountainous areas of California last week, moved towards the Midwest, hitting Chicago especially.

In Washington, the snow began to fall in the early hours of Sunday. The NWS predicts that snow cover can reach up to 20cm in the Washington and Baltimore area of Maryland.

The storm should continue in the region through Tuesday.

According to a White House official, the president, Joe Biden, met with his advisers to discuss “a number of issues, including the arrival of the winter storm.” (I)
