The police can quickly determine whether the license plate is current. Because the color changes every year and is blue for the 2024/25 insurance year. Motor vehicles with insurance plates therefore need new protection; owners of such vehicles should take care of renewing the insurance and get the current plate. Up to a speed of 45 km/h, no approval from the vehicle registration office is required, but an operating license and liability insurance are still required. The insurance number serves as proof of existing insurance. This must be applied for every year and changed on March 1st.
The following vehicles require an insurance license plate:
Mopeds with a maximum displacement of 50 cc and a maximum design speed of 45 km/h. This includes:
– Mopeds, mopeds and scooters with a maximum displacement of 50 cc.
– Quads and trikes if they have the same specifications.
– Mopeds and mopeds manufactured in the former GDR with a maximum speed of 60 km/h, which were first insured before March 1, 1992.
– Four-wheeled light vehicles with a maximum curb weight of 350 kg and a maximum speed of 45 km/h.
– Segways, where the electric drive enables a maximum speed of 20 km/h.
– Pedelecs with motors over 250 watts or a pedal assistance over 25 km/h or a starting aid over 6 km/h.
– Motorized medical elevators (driving license classes M and S).
– An insurance license plate with an operating license has recently been required for e-scooters.
