New Hispanic art will be auctioned; tomorrow they will offer at least 19 works

MEXICO CITY. The art gallery and auction room The Auctions Suite, located in Barcelona, ​​Spain, announced that tomorrow it will offer at least 19 works by artists from New Spain or those active in Mexico during the 18th century, including Baltasar Echave Orio, José de Páez and Miguel Cabrera.

One of the best valued pieces is The dream of Saint Joseph, by Baltasar Echave Orio (1548-1624), located in lot 57 and valued between 40 thousand and 50 thousand euros (about 971 thousand pesos), according to the gallery.

As well as oil The Divine Shepherd, by Miguel Cabrera (1715-1720), located in lot 50, also priced between 45,000 and 50,000 euros.

This work is compared to the one the artist painted on copper, preserved in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

As well as another partially similar one that protects the National Museum of Art (Munal), acquired in the Butterfield and Butterfield house, in Los Angeles, at the initiative of the Mexican consulate and transferred to the premises as a donation from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts, in 1998.

Lot 66 follows, with the painting of Saint Joseph with the Child, attributed to Sebastián López Arteaga (1610-1656), a Spanish Baroque painter who trained with Zurbarán in 1620 and introduced his style to New Spain. This work has a fixed price of 27,000 to 30,000 euros.

ART AND DEVOTION

Another piece that will be put on sale is an oil painting on copper, used as a nun’s pectoral shield, also attributed to Sebastián López Arteaga, contained in lot 44, at an estimated price of 20,000 to 22,000 euros.

About this piece, it is explained that it is a genre of devotional art spread during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Spain and in the novohispan worldO.

And, on occasions, artists of the stature of José de Páez, Miguel Cabrera or Luis Juárez made shields of this type.

Another interesting piece that will be offered is another version of Saint Joseph with the Child, by Mariano Farfán de los Cobos, painted on a nun’s shield, around 1770.

As well as an oil painting of the Immaculate virgin, elaborated in the workshop of the brothers Juan and Miguel González – active in New Spain in the middle of the 17th century – who specialized in the painting of conch. Said piece it is auctioned between 25 thousand and 30 thousand euros.

In total, said auction, which will take place tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in Spain, will include 281 works by Bartolomé de Castro, Juan de Juanes, Blas de Prado, Alonso Gallego and Miguel Castillo, among others.
