1. Prince Philip met his future wife when she was only thirteen years old

The first meeting between Philip and Queen Elizabeth II took place at the prince’s cousin’s wedding. However, they did not notice until the weekend, when Elizabeth and her family visited the University of the Royal Navy, where they were to meet some cadets.

Due to the flu epidemic, then only 13-year-old Elizabeth and her sister Margaret were unable to attend a chapel service, so Prince Philip, who was the only healthy man, came to entertain the royal girls to their house. He took them to the tennis court, where he allegedly showed Alžběta how high he could jump over the playing net and he enchanted her with his sports performances.

2. The wedding was simple, Elizabeth saved for it with the help of allotment tickets

Britain was in economic crisis at the time of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s wedding, due to the aftermath of World War II. Therefore, the queen had to save on her wedding dress with the help of rations, and the cake was baked from donated ingredients.

There were 2,000 guests at the ceremony, and although the wedding was simpler for the royal situation, it is still considered one of the most beautiful.

3. On the day of the wedding, Philip stopped smoking

Queen Elizabeth II’s father was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer as a result of his passion. The queen therefore hated smoking. But the Duke of Edinburgh was a heavy smoker.

At Elizabeth’s request, the prince resigned on his wedding day.

4. Philip gave up his titles out of love, he and Elizabeth had separate bedrooms

His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was born Prince and King of Greece in Greece, but because of his love for Queen Elizabeth II, he gave up all his titles in order to become her husband.
