For just under two million euros, the facility, once created by the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, is to be renovated and renovated in the middle of Darmstadt’s city center.

The Prince Georg Garden, which is adjacent to the Herrngarten in Darmstadt’s city center, is being renovated and made more attractive with financial support from the federal and state governments. By 2022, 1.8 million euros will be invested in the garden monument, according to announcements from the Minister of Art and Culture Angela Dorn (Greens) and the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens responsible for the plant. Half of the money comes from the funding program “Investments for national cultural institutions in Germany”. The other half contributes to the country. According to Dorn, the money will be used primarily to renew the greenhouses and sanitary facilities.

The ensemble of the gardens includes the Prinz-Georg-Palais, in which the Grand Ducal Porcelain Museum is located, the Pretlacksche garden house with library and reading room, a tea house made of wooden trellis, an orangery and plant arrangements. Minister Dorn described the garden as a “beautiful gem” in the middle of Darmstadt, which enchanted visitors. The history of the system created by the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt dates back to the 17th century. In 1748 the pleasure and utility garden was merged from two systems.

Facade renovation planned

In the facility and in the greenhouses, the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens also trains young people to become flower and ornamental gardeners. According to the Minister, some of the old buildings can no longer be entered, are too small or are no longer up to date in terms of air conditioning.

The money is now to be used to build new, modern, air-conditioned, safe greenhouses in order to grow the plants for the interlacing in the rococo garden borders. In addition, the changing and common rooms in the former orangery are to be renovated, in which the trainees in particular are staying. It is also planned to renew the necessary technical infrastructure and pave the courtyard according to the historical model.

The lock management only had the roof of the Pretlack garden house renewed last year for more than a quarter of a million euros. According to architect Anja Dötsch, this year the two facades of the house will also be renewed and the reading room overhauled. The next year it is planned to renovate the tea house in the Prince Georg Garden.
