New findings about omicron – Outbreak after the third dose

In a new research report German and South African researchers describe how seven travelers from Germany were infected with the omicron variant in South Africa – despite the fact that all were vaccinated with three doses.

– This research report is one of the first to describe breakthrough infection with the omicron variant in people who have been vaccinated three times against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, says assistant health director Espen Rostrup Nakstad to Dagbladet and continues:

– Although the study is small and not yet peer-reviewed, it shows that the third dose of mRNA vaccine in this case was not enough to prevent covid-19 disease in seven of seven young people, despite recent vaccination and an average age of 28 years.

Not sufficient

The omicron variant is probably significantly more contagious than the delta variant. Among other things, it has a significantly greater ability to circumvent immunity as a result of undergoing infection or vaccination.

This research report indicates that not even three doses are enough to prevent the omicron from spreading.

– The study shows that even three doses of mRNA vaccine are not enough to prevent symptomatic disease with the omicron variant. It is not suitable for describing how much the vaccine protects against serious illness, and especially not in older age groups. It is knowledge that we still need, says Nakstad.

Our report, the researchers write, shows that the refreshing doses fail to prevent symptomatic disease, and emphasizes the need for non-medical infection control measures. They also believe that their findings underline the need for adjusted vaccines, which to a greater extent prevent the spread of infection with omicron.

Travelers

It was in the first half of November that the travelers arrived in South Africa, where everyone presented a negative corona test. Four of them were in South Africa in connection with an internship at various local hospitals, while the remaining three were there on holiday. The spread of infection took place in late November or early December.

Five of the cases have been detected in the omicron variant, and the researchers reckon that the other two have also been infected with omicron due to their treatment of the other cases of infection.

Of the five women and two men, all had received three doses of mRNA vaccine with the exception of one person who received the virus vector vaccine as his first dose, and then two doses of mRNA vaccine, says Nakstad and continues:

All seven had typical mild to moderate covid-19 symptoms with sore throat, lethargy, headache, dry cough, chest pain, sinus pain and runny nose. After one week of observation, seven out of seven had a dry cough, while five out of seven had a runny nose, four out of seven had a sore throat and three out of seven had shortness of breath.

However, none of them were admitted, and the researchers believe that the mild course of the disease indicates that the vaccines provide good protection against serious covid-19 disease.

Unique opportunity

The researchers write that this research report shows that the omicron variant is able to bypass immunity from the mRNA vaccine, as they had expected.

British health authorities has studied the effect of Pfizer vaccines against the omicron variant, and the findings indicate that the third dose is up to 76 percent effective against symptomatic disease due to omicron.

Furthermore, they write that South Africa has not had the opportunity to offer the population its refresher doses yet, and that the travelers from Germany thus gave them a unique opportunity to study breakthrough infections with omicron in people who have received the third dose.
