Chinese authorities have apparently discovered the cause of the mysterious pneumonia cases. A news anchor announced that experts have identified the previously unknown pneumonia pathogen as a novel coronavirus.
According to the preliminary investigation, the pathogen shows the typical morphology of a coronavirus and has been confirmed in 16 patients.
China has been puzzling over unknown pathogens for weeks
In recent weeks, 59 people in China had contracted pneumonia, seven of them in critical condition. Eight patients were discharged on Wednesday because they no longer had any symptoms. Corona viruses can cause common colds but also serious respiratory diseases such as SARS.
USA issues travel warning
A market in the central Chinese metropolis of Wuhan is suspected of being the origin of the novel pathogen, where wild animals were also sold in addition to fish. The market has since been closed. Worries grow before the big wave of travel to the upcoming Chinese New Year. There are travel warnings for the area.
