New constitution: the league of imams oppose secularism

The Malian League of Imams and Scholars for Islamic Solidarity in Mali (Limama) on Tuesday called on all patriotic Muslims to vote against the proposed new constitution in its current form.

This request was formally expressed during a press briefing in Bamako demanding, in addition, the pure and simple withdrawal of secularism in the draft of the new Constitution of Mali. Limama’s secretary general, Gaoussou Sidiki Minta, calls on the authorities to replace secularism with a multi-confessional state. According to him, “secularism is a trick that rulers use as they please to padlock the religion or religions”, stressing that “this practice was used both by the colonial power and by all the regimes of the era of independence which ruled our country. Mohamed Kimbiri, 1st secretary for the organization of the Islamic high council and president of the collective of Muslim associations of Mali, for his part indicated that “secularism according to the French mentality is nothing other than the rejection of religion. The French reality and the Malian reality are not the same, so how come we are going to make our Constitution a certified true copy of the French model. That’s what really shocked us.”
