Shooting took place at a private Christian school that welcomes about 200 students, from preschool to sixth grade. Three adults also died.

At least three children were killed during a shooting that took place this Monday at a private school in Nashville, in the US state of Tennessee, according to a spokesman for a local hospital quoted by the US media.

The author of the shooting was 28 years old, confirmed the police, who had indicated that it could be a teenager.

The woman, a native of Nashville, died in a confrontation with police officers inside The Covenant School, a private Christian school founded in 2001 and which welcomes about 200 students, from preschool to sixth grade.

Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron revealed at a press conference that the alleged attacker entered the school through a side door, carrying two semi-automatic weapons and at least one pistol.

“Right now, we are trying to identify her”, said the spokesman, who noted that he did not know if the woman had any connection with the educational institution.

Aaron assured that the police response was “quick” and that, after accessing the first floor of the school, the agents heard shots coming from the second floor and decided to go up.

Several students were seen leaving the school

Already on the second floor they found a young woman who was shooting and two policemen ended up opening fire on her.

Several pupils were seen leaving the school – surrounded by police cars – for a nearby church to be reunited with their parents.

The deadly shooting comes as communities across the country reel from a wave of school violence, including last year’s shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas; or a shooting last week in Denver that injured two administrators.

This is already the 128th mass shooting in the United States since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting when at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

The United States, where approximately 400 million firearms circulate, is frequently affected by deadly shootings, including in schools.

Since the beginning of 2023, there have been at least 30 incidents involving firearms in schools in the United States, which have left eight dead and 23 injured, according to data from the organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
