Netherlands Limits Use of AstraZeneca Vaccine for Elderly People

Suara.com – Usage restrictions AstraZeneca vaccine carried out a number of countries around the world, after the discovery of a rare side effect of blood clots.

After the Philippines and England, Netherlands will also limit usage the COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca in the elderly group aged 60 years and over.

Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said the decision came a day after European drug regulators said they had found rare cases of blood clots in a number of adult vaccine recipients, although the benefits of the vaccine still outweigh the risks.

“People over 60 years of age, born in the 1960s or earlier, can safely continue receiving AstraZeneca injections. People under 60 will get a different vaccine,” he said.

The Netherlands, which has ordered 12 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, has become one of the countries to limit the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in recent days following fears of side effects.

However, de Jonge emphasized a greater risk for older adults.

“The risk of health problems from COVID-19 in people over 60 years of age is many times greater than the risk of severe thrombosis side effects which are reported very rarely with low platelet counts,” he said.

The vaccine, which AstraZeneca developed with the University of Oxford and is considered a global vaccine pioneer, faces safety concerns and supply issues. [ANTARA]
