September 2023 Supermoon: Harvest Moon and Last Supermoon Phenomenon of the Year

Jakarta

The supermoon phenomenon will occur again this month, precisely on Friday, September 29 2023. Previously, a supermoon occurred last August. The presence of this September supermoon will be the last supermoon phenomenon in 2023.

In some countries, this supermoon coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival. So this month is also called the ‘harvest moon’ or the last harvest moon.

According to Patrick Hartigan, professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, the harvest moon occurs as a marker of the harvest period.

“Harvest moon is called that because for several days the full moon will rise when the sun sets,” he explained.

At that time, farmers in the northern hemisphere would harvest their crops and get more light to work again after the sun went down.

In general, the rise of the Moon occurs about 50 minutes later. However, before the harvest month, the appearance becomes faster, namely just 24 minutes in Chicago and 17 minutes in Seattle.

Second Supermoon Phenomenon in 2023

Launching the site Business Insider, a supermoon is a type of full Moon that appears 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the dimmest Moon of the year. This is because this month’s location is closest to Earth, which is called perigee.

However, it is known that this month’s supermoon will not be as big as last August. Even so, the size of the supermoon this time is still on average large compared to a normal Moon.

“The difference between this full moon and August is only 4,370 kilometers, so this full moon will be very close,” explained Noah Petro, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter project scientist to Insider.

Supermoon Appearance

Although the supermoon in September 2023 will not be as close and bright as the supermoon in August, it will probably appear more dark yellow, orange or red.

The moon will appear to change color when it rises, sets, or during a lunar eclipse. This is also the same as seeing the sunrise or sunset which emits red light.

“Earth’s atmosphere scatters light except for red or orange colors,” explains Patrick.

Apart from that, the Moon’s brightness level is also influenced by atmospheric conditions, such as clouds, smoke or dust which can change its color.

When will the September 2023 Supermoon appear?

The best time to see this big September supermoon is when the Moon enters its rising time. Because, when it rises, objects in the foreground such as trees or rocks will give a sense of scale and make the Moon look bigger and more amazing.

So the right time to see the supermoon phenomenon in this year’s harvest month is just before the moon rises, which is around 7 pm local time.

According to NASA, on September 29, the Sun will rise at 07.02 California time and set at 18.54 with twilight ending at 19.52.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, this phenomenon began to appear on September 29 at 16.57 WIB.
