Nessebar remains on the UNESCO list – 2024-04-14 14:38:33

The point to change the status of Old Nessebar, which was included in the agenda of the session of the council in Brazil, has been dropped, announced the mayor of the city Nikolay Dimitrov, referring to the headquarters of the World Organization.

One of the oldest cities in the world – Nessebar, remains under the patrimony of the World Organization for Culture, Education and Science of the United Nations – UNESCO.

The point to change the status of Old Nessebar, which was included in the agenda of the session of the council in Brazil, has been dropped, announced the mayor of the city Nikolay Dimitrov, referring to the headquarters of the World Organization.

Nessebar, which is also a respected member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities, is not endangered and will not enter the list of cities at risk, despite the targeted and well-directed campaign against the Bulgarian city, the press center of the municipality specifies.

The Municipal Administration points out that they are constantly making efforts to limit alley trade, introduce bicycle patrols to ensure security and order, build affordable parking lots, develop projects for the restoration of cultural monuments.

“Nessebar is a beautiful and unique city of its kind. The statements that there are only clothes stalls in old Nessebar are incorrect. They are more about momentum from the past and bad faith attitude. The present administration has done much to remove much of the previously existing stalls. For this purpose, we have created a special outdoor bazaar to separate the street vendors. Nessebar is not some negative exception. An example in this regard is Florence, which is also a UNESCO city, but there is also street trading there. Our goal is that, together with the cultural and architectural monuments, trade for visitors and tourists should exist, of course, within certain limits and in the best optimal way”, is the opinion of the mayor Nikolay Dimitrov.

He is categorical that all the efforts of the local government, the state and the citizens must be based on the great responsibility that the ancient history and preserved heritage of Nessebar carries.

The Municipality points out that they also take all care to preserve the ancient monuments. He completed the restoration with the help of the “A. G. Leventis”, of one of the emblematic churches in the city – “St. Stephen”. The same foundation also finances the projects for the restoration of the temples “St. Paraskeva” and “St. St. Archangel Michael and Gabriel”. The municipality of Nessebar completed a project for the restoration of the church “St. John the Baptist” in the UNESCO city. Unfortunately, however, in recent years, rather great carelessness has been shown by institutions that allowed a number of illegal additions to the old houses to be carried out, the Municipality points out.

On her initiative and with the assistance of the “A. G. Leventis”, ICOMOS – Bulgaria and ICOMOS – Greece in the autumn, Nessebar will host a conference dedicated to the preservation of ancient cities. Then scientists and experts in the field will talk about the topic with the local people.
