Neptune Waves: The New Hyper-Natural Hair Trend

Is the “quiet luxury” blow-dry trend about to be dethroned? Not necessarily. However, a new hair trend appeared some time ago and continues to thrill all “beauty addicts”. If they (and more) remind us of summer, “neptune waves” are the new hyper-natural waves to adopt now.

What are “neptune waves”?

In addition to airy and ultra voluminous blow-drying, the trend is for pulled and flat hairstyles. In a less chic but still glamorous aesthetic, hair fashion is currently focusing on simpler and more natural waves. Called “neptune waves”, they have already been adopted by celebrities such as Gigi Hadid, Gwyneth Platrow and Kylie Jenner.

Concretely, this hairstyle is similar to “beach waves”, a style that our hair adopts almost naturally when leaving the beach. Here, waves are generally done on (very) long hair and without too much volume. Easy to reproduce, “neptune waves” can be created without heat by simply braiding the hair while it is still damp. However, the best way to obtain them is still to use a heating device.

How to reproduce the “neptune waves”?

British hairstylist Tom Smith has already revealed his method for creating pretty waves. To do this, you will need a three-headed curling iron. Since this hairstyle requires the use of a heating tool, don’t forget to spray your hair with a heat protectant spray before using it. Moreover, the hairdresser recommends creating this hairstyle on very clean and not too nourished hair. “A volumizing or leave-in styling spray, heat protectant spray rather than a leave-in conditioner or other product with a moisturizing element will make waves last longer on fine, flat hair without volume.”specifies Tom Smith, indicating that these steps are particularly important for fine hair.

But if you don’t have a curling iron (which does all the work itself), French hairdresser Paul Duchemin also gives his tip. On TikTok, (@paul_duchemin) he shows how to create “neptune waves” using a hair straightener. As he states in his tutorial, “the movement is a move to the left, a move to the right”.

More concretely, place a section of hair between the plates closest to the root (without burning yourself) and make a first movement of the wrist outwards, then slide the device slightly lower on the section and repeat the movement towards the inside. Repeat these steps all along the section of hair, alternating between the outside and inside of your head. After performing these movements on your entire hair, you will obtain curls. However, the process does not end there. Apply an oil or serum and lightly relax the curls. You will then obtain the “neptune waves” you desire!
