Negative analyzes for 16th suspected coronavirus case in Portugal

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) reported today that the results of the analyzes carried out on the 16th suspected case in Portugal of infection with the new coronavirus Covid-19 were negative.

“A patient who was referred today to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João (CHUSJ), had a negative result after performing laboratory tests by CHUSJ, with two negative biological samples,” said the DGS in a statement.

Another suspected case of infection with Covid-19, the 17th in Portugal, was today referred to Hospital Curry Cabral, in Lisbon, after being analyzed on the arrival of a trip to Milan.

All suspected cases of Covid-19 infection reported in Portugal to date have had negative test results.

So far, the only known case of a Portuguese person infected with the new virus is that of a cruise ship crew member who is hospitalized in Japan.

Overall, the provisional balance of the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic is 2,707 dead and about 80,300 people infected, according to data reported to date by about 30 countries.

In addition to 2,665 deaths in China, where the outbreak began in December 2019, there are fatalities in Iran, South Korea, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, France and Taiwan.

The World Health Organization has declared the Covid-19 outbreak as an international emergency and has warned of a possible pandemic, after a sudden increase in cases in Italy, South Korea and Iran in recent days.
